How to blur the background of a photo
Professional portraits often have a sharp subject against a soft, dreamy background. This page creates that look from any photo: AI separates the subject from the scene, then blurs only what’s behind it, all on your own device.
-
Step 1
Add a photo
Portraits, pets and products against a busy background benefit the most.
-
Step 2
Let the AI load once
The model downloads to your browser on first use and is kept for next time. Your photo is not uploaded.
-
Step 3
Set the blur strength
Move the slider: low values give a gentle softening, high values a strong, creamy blur.
-
Step 4
Review and save
Touch up any edges the AI got wrong, then download the result as a JPG.
Why a blurred background works
Photographers achieve this look with a wide aperture and a long lens: only the subject is in focus, and everything behind it melts away. It isolates the person or object, hides distracting clutter like doorframes, signs and passers-by, and gives an ordinary snapshot a deliberate, polished feel. Phone “portrait modes” imitate it with depth sensors and software, and this tool does something similar after the fact, for photos taken without it.
Choosing the right strength
- Light blur (around 4–10): keeps the setting recognizable, such as a café, an office or a street, while making the subject pop. Good for profile photos where the location adds context.
- Medium blur (around 12–20): the classic portrait look; shapes are still visible but no detail competes for attention.
- Strong blur (above 25): turns the background into soft color, ideal for product shots and for hiding a messy room completely.
The blur is worked out from the full-resolution photo, so it looks smooth even on large images.
Getting a natural result
Real camera blur increases gradually with distance, while this effect blurs everything behind the subject evenly, which is what most people expect from a portrait effect. It looks most convincing when the subject is clearly in front of the background. Where the subject touches the scene, for example feet on the ground or a hand on a table, look closely: you may want to restore a little of the ground with the touch-up brush so it doesn’t look like the subject is floating.
Hair is handled by the people model automatically when a face is visible. If you notice a thin sharp outline around the subject, raise Edge cleanup; if fine hairs disappear, lower it.
Even blur or lens blur
Even softens the whole background by the same amount, which is quick and suits plain walls and studio-style shots. Lens mimics a real camera lens: a second AI model, Depth Anything V2 Small, estimates how far away each part of the scene is, and the blur grows the farther something is behind your subject. The ground at your subject’s feet stays crisp, a bench a few steps back is slightly soft, and distant trees melt away. Outdoor scenes with depth, such as streets, parks, beaches and rooms, benefit most.
Lens needs a one-time 27 MB download for the depth model and adds a second or two per photo. The depth map is estimated at modest resolution, so very fine structures like fence wires can blur a little unevenly; Even is the safer choice for those.
Several photos, one consistent look
Preparing a set of team headshots or a product range? Add them together and use the same blur strength for all of them, so the collection looks consistent. Each photo gets its own AI cut-out, and you can touch up any single image without affecting the rest.
Other ways to use the same tool
The same AI cut-out can also replace the background entirely. Choose a solid color for a studio look, or go to White Background for product listings, or Make Background Transparent for a cut-out you can place anywhere. If your goal is to hide faces of people in the background rather than soften the whole scene, Blur Faces finds and blurs them individually.
Whichever option you choose, the processing happens in your browser, and your photo stays on your device.
Frequently asked questions
How do I blur the background of a photo?
Add the photo here and press the button. The AI keeps the subject sharp and blurs everything behind it. Adjust the strength with the slider.
Does this work like portrait mode on a phone?
It creates a similar look after the photo was taken. The background is blurred evenly behind the subject rather than by distance, which suits most portraits and product shots.
Can I blur the background of a pet or product photo?
Yes. The AI works with people, pets and objects. Clear subjects in front of the background give the best results.
What if part of my subject gets blurred?
Use Touch up and the Restore brush to bring those parts back into the sharp foreground.
Will the photo lose quality?
The subject keeps its full resolution and detail. The result is saved as a high-quality JPG by default, or choose PNG for lossless output.
Is my photo uploaded?
No. The blur is created by AI running in your browser, and the photo never leaves your device.
Can I blur only part of the background?
The whole background is blurred evenly. To keep part of it sharp, for example the ground under someone’s feet, use the Restore brush in Touch up on that area.
