How to convert HEIC to JPG
iPhones save photos as HEIC files, which Windows, many Android apps and lots of websites can’t open. Convert them to JPG here, one at a time or hundreds at once, and get pictures that work everywhere, without installing anything or uploading your photos.
-
Step 1
Add your HEIC photos
Drop in .heic or .heif files from your iPhone, iPad or a cloud backup. Large batches are fine.
-
Step 2
Keep JPG and the quality
JPG is selected for you at 90% quality, which keeps photos looking exactly like the originals.
-
Step 3
Convert
Press Convert. The first time, browsers other than Safari load a small HEIC decoder; after that it’s instant.
-
Step 4
Download your JPGs
Save each photo, or download them all in a single ZIP to unpack wherever you need them.
What is a HEIC file?
HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is the photo format Apple has used by default since iOS 11. It’s based on the HEIF standard and the same compression technology as modern HD video, which lets it store a photo at about half the size of an equivalent JPG. That’s great for your iPhone’s storage, and Apple devices open HEIC without a second thought.
The trouble starts when the photo leaves the Apple world. Windows needs extra extensions from the Microsoft Store to view HEIC, many web forms reject it, older Android phones and apps don’t recognize it, and printing services often ask for JPG. Converting solves all of that in one step.
How the conversion works in your browser
Safari can decode HEIC natively, so on a Mac or iPhone it’s direct. Chrome, Edge and Firefox can’t, so the first time you add a HEIC file in those browsers, ImageCocoon loads libheif, a well-known open-source HEIC decoder compiled to run inside the browser (about 3 MB, then cached). Your photos are decoded and re-saved as JPG on your device; they’re never uploaded.
Photos come out the right way up, because the rotation stored in the HEIC is applied. Re-saving as JPG also leaves behind the hidden location and camera details, which is handy if you’re sharing the pictures publicly. To check exactly what an iPhone photo contains first, open it in Remove EXIF Data.
Quality and size: what to expect
Because HEIC compresses more efficiently than JPG, your JPGs will usually be somewhat larger than the HEIC originals, often by 30–100% at the default 90% quality. That’s normal; it’s the cost of a format that opens everywhere. Need them smaller? Lower the quality to 80%, or run the JPGs through Compress to a target size if a form demands something like “under 200 KB”.
Live Photos are stored as a still HEIC plus a separate short video. Converting the HEIC gives you the still photo. Some iPhone HEIC files also hold extras, like depth data for portrait mode; the JPG contains the photo as you see it.
Stop HEIC at the source (optional)
If you regularly need JPGs, your iPhone can save them directly: go to Settings → Camera → Formats and choose Most Compatible. New photos will be JPG, at the cost of using more storage. Alternatively, Settings → Photos → Transfer to Mac or PC → Automatic converts photos to JPG when you copy them to a computer with a cable. Our guide to opening HEIC files on Windows, Mac and Android covers every option.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert HEIC to JPG on Windows?
Open this page in any browser on Windows, drop in your HEIC photos and press Convert. You do not need to install the HEIF extensions or any other software.
Can I convert many iPhone photos at once?
Yes. Add as many HEIC files as you like, convert them in one go and download them together as a ZIP.
Does converting HEIC to JPG lose quality?
At the default 90 percent quality, the JPG looks the same as the original. The file is usually larger than the HEIC because JPG compression is less efficient.
Why are my JPGs bigger than the HEIC files?
HEIC uses newer, more efficient compression and stores photos at roughly half the size of a JPG. Converting to JPG trades some size for compatibility.
Will my photos be the right way up?
Yes. The orientation stored in the HEIC file is applied during conversion, so photos display upright everywhere.
Does it work with Live Photos?
It converts the still image part of a Live Photo to JPG. The short video part is a separate file and is not included.
Are my iPhone photos uploaded?
No. The HEIC decoder runs inside your browser, so your photos are converted on your own device and never uploaded.
