How to convert WebP to JPG

Saved an image from a website and found it’s a .webp file your app won’t open? Converting WebP to JPG gives you a picture that works in every editor, phone, printer and upload form, and it takes a few seconds right here in your browser.

    1. Step 1

      Add the WebP files

Drag in the .webp images you downloaded, or browse for them. You can convert several at once.

    2. Step 2

      Leave JPG selected

This page already chooses JPG. The default 90% quality keeps the picture looking just like the WebP.

    3. Step 3

      Choose a background if needed

Some WebP images have transparent areas. These become the background color you pick, white by default.

    4. Step 4

      Convert and save

Press Convert, then download your JPGs individually or in a ZIP.

Why so many downloaded images are WebP

WebP is a format created by Google that makes images noticeably smaller than JPG at the same quality, so websites load faster. Most big sites, online shops and image search results now serve WebP to browsers that support it, which today means practically all of them. The result: right-click “Save image as” and you often end up with a .webp file rather than the JPG you expected.

Browsers display WebP perfectly, but plenty of other software still trips over it: older versions of photo editors and office suites, some print kiosks and printing services, many upload forms, and a few email and messaging apps.

Quality and file size after converting

WebP is more efficient than JPG, so the JPG version is usually somewhat larger, often by 20–50% at the default quality. That’s expected and nothing to worry about; you’re trading a little size for compatibility. If the JPG must be small, lower the quality slider to around 75–80% or use Compress Image afterwards.

A WebP that was already compressed can’t gain detail by being converted. At 90% quality the JPG looks the same as the WebP, though, so you won’t lose anything noticeable either.

    Animated and transparent WebP files

WebP can also hold animations and transparency, and JPG supports neither. For an animated WebP, the converter keeps the first frame as a still JPG and marks the file so you know. Transparent areas are filled with the background color you choose. If you’d rather keep transparency, convert WebP to PNG instead.

    Do it without uploading

Online converters usually upload your file to their server, convert it there and make you download it again. Here, the WebP is decoded by your own browser and saved as a JPG on your device, so there’s no upload wait, no queue and nothing stored anywhere else. That matters if the images are screenshots of private information or photos of people.

Prefer to keep files small and modern? You can go the other way too, with JPG to WebP.

    Using the image responsibly

Converting a file changes its format, not who owns it. Pictures on websites are usually protected by copyright, so check that you have permission before reusing someone else’s photo in your own project, shop or social post. For your own images, or ones you’re licensed to use, converting is simply a matter of convenience.

    Frequently asked questions

Why does my computer save images as WebP?

Websites send WebP images because they are smaller and load faster. When you save an image from a page, you get the format the site sent, which is increasingly WebP.

Why is the JPG bigger than the WebP?

WebP compresses images more efficiently than JPG. Converting to JPG trades a slightly larger file for compatibility with almost every app and website.

Will I lose quality converting WebP to JPG?

At the default 90 percent quality, the JPG looks the same as the WebP. Lower settings make smaller files with gradually more visible compression.

    What about animated WebP images?

JPG cannot store animation, so the first frame is saved as a still image. The tool tells you when a WebP is animated.

Can I keep the transparent background?

Not in JPG, which has no transparency. Convert WebP to PNG to keep transparent areas.

Is the conversion done online on a server?

No. It runs in your browser on your own device, so your images are never uploaded.

Can I stop my browser from saving images as WebP?

Not reliably, because the website decides which format it sends. The simplest fix is to save the image as it comes and convert it to JPG here when you need to.
