How to make a background transparent

A transparent background lets a person, product or logo sit cleanly on top of anything: a slide, a website, a poster or a sticker sheet. This page removes the background with AI on your device and saves a PNG whose background is genuinely see-through.

    1. Step 1

      Drop in the image

Photos, product shots and simple graphics all work. Add several if you’re preparing a set.

    2. Step 2

      Confirm the AI download once

Your browser fetches the background-removal model the first time and stores it. No photo is uploaded.

    3. Step 3

      Check the edges

Use Touch up to erase stray background or restore missing parts, and Edge cleanup to remove faint halos.

    4. Step 4

      Save as PNG

Transparent is already selected and Automatic saves PNG, the most widely supported format for see-through images.

What “transparent” really means in a file

Every pixel in an image can carry an extra value called alpha, which says how opaque it is: fully solid, fully invisible, or anything in between. A “transparent background” simply means the background pixels have an alpha of zero. When you place the image on a colored slide or web page, those pixels let the color behind them show through.

The in-between values matter more than you might think. Soft edges around hair, fur and anti-aliased outlines use partial transparency, so the subject blends smoothly into whatever it’s placed on rather than looking cut out with scissors.

    PNG, WebP, or not JPG

PNG is the safe choice for transparent images: every app, browser, office suite and design tool understands it. WebP also supports transparency and makes much smaller files, which is ideal for your own website; choose it under “Save as”. JPG cannot store transparency at all, so if you save a cut-out as JPG, the empty areas are filled with white. That’s why this page saves PNG automatically.

If the PNG is larger than you’d like, run it through Compress Image, which shrinks PNGs by reducing colors while keeping the transparency, or convert it with PNG to WebP. Our format guide explains the differences in detail.

    Checking your result properly

Most viewers show transparency as a gray-and-white checkerboard, but a cut-out can look perfect on a checkerboard and still have a faint light fringe that only shows up on a dark background. Before using the image somewhere important, place it on the kind of background it will actually sit on. If you spot a halo, raise Edge cleanup a little, or paint the fringe away with the touch-up eraser.

Also check for gaps inside the subject. Light-colored clothing against a light wall, or a product with a hole in it, can confuse the AI. The Restore brush brings back anything that was removed by mistake.

    Popular uses for transparent images

    • Presentations and documents: people and products that sit naturally on colored slides.
    • Logos and signatures: drop a scanned logo or signature onto letterheads without a white box around it. For a simple dark logo on white paper, the general model usually gives a crisp result.
    • Stickers and print-on-demand: many services ask for transparent PNGs at a good resolution.
    • Thumbnails and social graphics: combine a cut-out of yourself with text and color; crop to the right shape afterwards with Crop Image.

    Done on your device

The cut-out is created by an AI model running inside your browser. Once it has downloaded (one time only), the whole process happens offline on your own computer or phone, which keeps personal photos, unreleased products and client work private.

    Frequently asked questions

How do I make the background of a picture transparent?

Add the picture to this page and press the button. The AI removes the background and the result is saved as a PNG with a transparent background.

Why does my transparent image show a white background?

Either it was saved as JPG, which cannot be transparent, or the program you opened it in shows transparency as white. Save as PNG or WebP and check it on a colored background.

Can I make a logo background transparent?

Yes. Scanned or photographed logos on plain paper usually work well. Use Touch up to clean any leftover specks.

    Will the edges look jagged?

No. Edges keep partial transparency, so they blend smoothly. Use Edge cleanup to remove any faint halo of the old background.

Is PNG or WebP better for transparency?

PNG works everywhere. WebP is much smaller and ideal for websites, and all current browsers support its transparency.

    Is my image uploaded?

No. The AI runs in your browser, so the image never leaves your device.
