How to compress an image to 20 KB
20 KB is one of the strictest limits you’ll meet, common for scanned signatures, thumb impressions and small ID photos on government, exam and job application portals. This page gets each image under 20 KB at the best quality that fits, without uploading anything.
-
Step 1
Prepare the image
Crop it tightly first: a signature with lots of empty paper around it wastes precious bytes on nothing.
-
Step 2
Add it here
Drop in the photo or scan. The target is already set to 20 KB and the output to JPG.
-
Step 3
Compress
Press Compress. The tool finds the highest quality that fits, and reduces the dimensions only if it must.
-
Step 4
Check and download
The card shows the final size, quality and dimensions. Download it and upload to your form.
What fits into 20 KB?
Twenty kilobytes is about one five-hundredth of a typical phone photo, so something has to give. For a clear signature on white paper, 20 KB is generous: even a few hundred pixels wide at high quality usually comes in well under. For a photo of a face, expect a small image, often in the region of 300–600 pixels wide, which is exactly what most forms display anyway.
The tool lowers the JPG quality first, but never below 50%, because below that, blocky patches appear around faces and handwriting. If 50% still doesn’t fit, it shrinks the width and height step by step until the file is under 20 KB. The result card always tells you the final size, so there are no surprises when you upload.
Tips for signatures and thumb impressions
- Use dark ink on plain white paper, and photograph or scan it in good, even light so the paper looks white rather than gray.
- Crop close to the signature with Crop Image, leaving just a small border. Less empty paper means more bytes for the ink.
- Check the required dimensions. Many forms specify a width and height in pixels as well as a size in KB. Resize to those exact numbers with Resize Image before compressing.
- Save as JPG unless the form says otherwise. It’s the format practically every portal accepts.
Tips for tiny ID photos
For a face photo under 20 KB, simplicity is your friend. A plain, light background compresses far better than a busy room behind you, and a well-lit face keeps its detail at small sizes. Crop to the shape the form asks for (often a portrait rectangle or a square) so no bytes are spent on background. If the form gives a range like 10–20 KB, aim for the top of it: the tool’s result will sit just under your target, giving the sharpest image allowed.
Limits a little more relaxed? The 50 KB page keeps photos noticeably sharper, and the custom size tool accepts any number you type.
Your documents stay private
Signatures and ID photos are exactly the kind of thing you shouldn’t hand to an unknown website. This compressor runs inside your browser, so the image is processed on your own device and never uploaded. Close the tab and it’s gone. Re-saving also removes hidden details like the phone model and location from the file before it reaches the form.
Frequently asked questions
How do I reduce a signature image to under 20 KB?
Crop the signature tightly, add it here and press Compress. The tool saves it as a JPG under 20 KB at the highest quality that fits, which for a signature on white paper is usually very sharp.
Will my photo still be clear at 20 KB?
Signatures stay very clear. Face photos become smaller, often a few hundred pixels wide, but remain recognizable. Using a plain, light background helps a lot.
Why did the tool make my image smaller in pixels?
To fit under 20 KB without dropping below 50 percent quality, where blocky artifacts appear, the tool reduces the dimensions. The result card shows the final size in pixels.
The form needs a size between 10 and 20 KB. Will it work?
Yes. The result lands just under 20 KB, which is inside that range. Very simple images may already be smaller, and the card shows the exact size.
My form also requires exact pixel dimensions. What should I do?
Resize or crop the image to those dimensions first with Resize Image or Crop Image, then compress the result here to get it under 20 KB.
Is 20 KB the same as 0.02 MB?
Yes. 20 KB is 20,000 bytes, which is 0.02 MB. The tool uses 1000 bytes per KB, so the file also passes forms that count 1024 bytes per KB.
Is my signature uploaded anywhere?
No. Compression runs entirely in your browser, and your image never leaves your device.
