How to convert an image to another format

Turn any picture into a JPG, PNG, WebP or AVIF file in a couple of clicks. It works with iPhone HEIC photos, GIFs and BMPs too, converts whole batches at once, and never sends your images to a server.

    1. Step 1

      Add your images

Drop in files of any supported type, or several different types at once. Mixed batches are fine.

    2. Step 2

      Choose the new format

Pick JPG, PNG, WebP or AVIF. Not sure which? The section below explains when each one is the right choice.

    3. Step 3

      Adjust quality and background

For JPG, WebP and AVIF, set the quality (90% is a safe default). For JPG, choose the color that fills any transparent areas.

    4. Step 4

      Convert and download

Press Convert, then save each file or grab them all as a ZIP. The file names stay the same; only the extension changes.

Which format should I convert to?

    • JPG works everywhere: every phone, computer, website and printer accepts it. Choose it for photos you need to send, upload or print. It has no transparency.
    • PNG is lossless and supports transparency, so it suits logos, screenshots, diagrams and anything you plan to edit further. It makes large files for photos.
    • WebP is the modern web format: typically a quarter to a third smaller than JPG at the same quality, with transparency support. All current browsers display it.
    • AVIF squeezes photos even smaller than WebP, often half the size of a JPG. Support is good in current browsers but patchier in older apps and editors.

Our detailed comparison, JPG vs PNG vs WebP vs AVIF, covers the trade-offs with examples.

    Transparency, animation and other details

When a transparent PNG, WebP or GIF becomes a JPG, the see-through areas need a color, because JPG can’t store transparency. White is the default; pick any other color to match the page or document the image will sit on. Converting to PNG, WebP or AVIF keeps transparency as it is.

Browsers can only paint a single frame of an animation onto a canvas, so animated GIFs and WebPs become still images showing the first frame. The tool flags animated files so this never comes as a surprise.

Converting re-saves the picture, which removes hidden metadata such as the camera model and GPS position, and converts colors to the standard sRGB space used on the web.

    iPhone photos and HEIC files

iPhones save photos as HEIC to save space, but Windows, many Android apps and lots of upload forms can’t open them. Safari can decode HEIC by itself; in Chrome, Edge and Firefox, ImageCocoon loads an open-source HEIC decoder the first time you add one (about 3 MB, cached after that). The dedicated HEIC to JPG converter is set up for exactly this job.

AVIF output works in every modern browser too. Where the browser can’t create AVIF files on its own, a WebAssembly encoder does it on your device; it’s a little slower, typically a few seconds for a large photo.

None of them upload anything. The conversion is done by your browser, so it’s quick even on a slow connection and your pictures stay private.

    Frequently asked questions

Which image formats can I convert from?

JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, GIF, BMP and HEIC. You can mix different formats in one batch.

Which formats can I convert to?

JPG, PNG, WebP and AVIF. These are the formats web browsers can create, and between them they cover almost every use.

Does converting an image lose quality?

Converting to PNG is lossless. Converting to JPG, WebP or AVIF uses compression; at the default 90% quality the result looks the same as the original for practically every photo.

What happens to transparent backgrounds when converting to JPG?

JPG cannot store transparency, so transparent areas are filled with a color you choose. White is the default.

    Can I convert animated GIFs?

They convert to still images showing the first frame, because browsers can only draw one frame of an animation to a canvas. The tool warns you when a file is animated.

Why is my PNG bigger than the original JPG?

PNG stores every pixel exactly, which takes much more space for photos than JPG’s compression. Use PNG for graphics and editing, and JPG or WebP for photos you share.

Are my files uploaded during conversion?

No. Every conversion happens inside your browser on your own device. Nothing is uploaded.
