Why marketplaces love white backgrounds

A plain white background puts all the attention on the product, looks consistent across a whole store, and blends into the white pages most marketplaces use. Several large marketplaces require or strongly recommend a pure white background for the main product image, and many shops adopt it for every listing because it simply looks tidier. Check your platform’s current photo rules, since they differ and change over time, but white is rarely the wrong choice.

Pure white means exactly #FFFFFF (red, green and blue all at 255). A slightly off-white backdrop photographed in a room usually comes out light gray or creamy, which is why replacing it digitally gives a cleaner result than trying to light a paper sweep perfectly.

Tips for great product cut-outs

• Contrast helps: shoot dark products on a light surface and light products on a darker one, so the AI can see the edges clearly.
• Diffuse light: soft light from a window avoids harsh shadows that might be mistaken for part of the product.
• Keep it simple: remove other objects from the frame. When a scene contains several items, the AI may keep more than you want.
• Mind the gaps: handles, straps and holes can fill in with old background. Erase those spots with the touch-up brush.
• Batch smartly: process the whole shoot together and download one ZIP, then crop every image to the same shape with Crop Image (square is common for shops).

Profile pictures and ID-style photos

White and very light gray backgrounds are also common for professional headshots and some online application photos.
