How to remove text from an image

Date stamps burned into old snapshots, captions on a screenshot, a label on a product shot, a phone number on a sign: text is easy to paint over and surprisingly easy for AI to fill. This page opens with the brush ready, because brushing is the most precise way to select letters.

    1. Step 1

      Add the image

Photos, screenshots and graphics all work. The editor opens with the brush selected.

    2. Step 2

      Paint over the text

Set the brush a little wider than the letters and paint across the whole line in one or two strokes.

    3. Step 3

      Remove it

Press Remove selection. The AI fills the area by continuing the background around the words.

    4. Step 4

      Check and save

Hold Compare to see the before and after, undo if needed, then save at full size.

Why the brush beats tapping for text

The object selector is trained to find objects, and a line of text is not one object but a scatter of small shapes. Tapping a word may select a single letter or the whole sign it is printed on. Painting a stroke over the line is quicker and gives the AI exactly the area to rebuild. Cover the letters fully, including any outline or drop shadow, and leave a sliver of background around them.

When text sits on its own object, such as a sticker or a price tag, tapping can be the better choice: the selector outlines the whole sticker and removing it takes the text with it.

What the AI can and can’t rebuild

Text on smooth or repeating backgrounds disappears almost perfectly: a date stamp over sky or grass, a caption on a plain color, a label on a wall. Text on top of detailed content is harder, because whatever the letters covered has to be imagined. Large headlines across a face or a complex pattern may leave a soft, painted look.

For screenshots with text on flat colors, the fill is often indistinguishable from the original. If a screenshot will be shared online, consider saving it as PNG for crisp edges; our guide to JPG, PNG, WebP and AVIF explains when each format makes sense.

    Old photos with date stamps

Many film and early digital cameras printed the date in orange digits in a corner. Those digits are small and usually sit over a fairly simple area, which makes them ideal for removal. Scan or photograph the print, add it here, paint over the date, and remove it. If the photo has other damage, remove one spot at a time so each fill has clean surroundings to copy from.

Use it on your own images

Please only remove text from images you own or have permission to edit. Watermarks and credit lines protect photographers’ and designers’ work, and removing them from someone else’s image can infringe their copyright. This tool is for tidying up your own photos, screenshots and product images. Like every ImageCocoon tool, it runs in your browser: your images are never uploaded, and the AI models are downloaded once, after asking you.

    Saving at full quality

The editor shows a working copy up to 2048 pixels across. When you save, each removal is applied again to the original full-size image, and only the painted areas change. The file keeps its original format and dimensions, ready to use straight away, or to shrink further with Compress Image if you need a smaller file.

    Frequently asked questions

How do I remove a date stamp from a photo?

Paint over the date with the brush, a little wider than the digits, and press Remove selection. The AI fills it from the surrounding area.

Can I remove text from a screenshot?

Yes. Text on flat backgrounds is the easiest case and usually disappears without a trace.

Why does the area look blurry after removing text?

The text covered detail the AI cannot see, so it had to invent it. Try removing smaller sections at a time, or undo and paint a slightly wider area.

Can I use this to remove watermarks?

Only from your own images. Removing someone else’s watermark or credit can break copyright law.

Does it keep the original image size?

Yes. Edits are applied to the full-size original and the image keeps its dimensions and format.

Is my image uploaded to remove the text?

No. The AI runs in your browser, so your images stay on your device.
