AI Image Upscaler
Make small images bigger and sharper. The AI rebuilds edges and texture as it enlarges, right in your browser.

How to upscale an image with AI
Got a picture that’s too small: a tiny logo, an old photo, a thumbnail you need bigger? This AI upscaler enlarges it 2× or 4× and sharpens edges and textures as it goes, which looks far better than ordinary stretching. It runs entirely on your device.
-
Step 1
Add a small image
Upscaling suits images up to about 1,500 pixels across: logos, screenshots, old photos and small web images.
-
Step 2
Choose 2× or 4×
2× doubles the width and height; 4× quadruples them. 2× usually looks the most natural.
-
Step 3
Allow the one-time download
The AI model and its engine download to your browser once. On computers with a WebGPU graphics card it runs much faster.
-
Step 4
Wait a moment, then save
Each image takes roughly 10–30 seconds. Download the results individually or as a ZIP.
Why AI upscaling looks better than resizing
When ordinary software enlarges an image, it has to invent the new pixels by averaging their neighbors. The result is bigger but soft and blurry, with smeared edges and jagged diagonal lines. An AI upscaler is trained on millions of pairs of small and large images, so it has learned what sharp edges, text strokes and common textures usually look like, and it rebuilds them as it enlarges.
ImageCocoon uses Real-ESRGAN, a well-regarded open-source upscaling model designed for real-world photos that may also be noisy or compressed. As well as enlarging, it cleans up the blocky artifacts of heavily compressed JPGs, which is why upscaled web images often look cleaner than the original.
What to expect, honestly
AI upscaling is impressive, but it isn’t magic. It can only estimate detail that was never captured. Edges, lettering, logos and illustrations come out crisp. Photos look sharper, but very fine textures like hair, grass and fabric can turn smooth and slightly painterly, especially at 4×. Faces become clearer, yet the AI may subtly change small features, so don’t treat an upscaled photo as an accurate record of what someone looked like.
For the most natural look, use 2×, start from the best original you have, and avoid upscaling the same image twice. If you just need a bigger file without any enhancement, Resize Image is instant.
Speed, size limits and your device
Upscaling is heavy work, so we process images in tiles, which keeps memory use steady and lets the progress bar show how far along it is. On a laptop with a WebGPU-capable graphics card, an 800 × 600 photo typically takes 10–20 seconds; without one, the processor does the work and it takes longer. Phones are slower still and have less memory, so very large images are refused with a clear message rather than crashing the tab.
The tool accepts images up to 2,048 pixels on the long side. That keeps the 4× working image manageable, since a 2,048-pixel image becomes 8,192 pixels across at 4×. The first use downloads the model (about 5 MB) plus the engine that runs it (14 MB, or 28 MB for the faster graphics-card version), and your browser keeps them.
Good uses for upscaling
- Logos and icons you only have in a small size, for slides and print.
- Old photos scanned or saved at low resolution, for sharing at a larger size.
- Screenshots and small web images that need to fill a bigger space in a document or video.
- Product photos that fall below a marketplace’s minimum size, though a new, larger photo is always better if you can take one.
After upscaling, use Compress Image to bring the file size down, or Crop Image to fit a particular shape. Your images are processed on your device throughout and never uploaded.
Frequently asked questions
How do I make an image bigger without losing quality?
Use an AI upscaler like this one. Add the image, choose 2× or 4×, and the AI enlarges it while rebuilding sharp edges, which looks much better than ordinary resizing.
Should I choose 2× or 4×?
2× usually looks the most natural. Use 4× for very small images such as icons and thumbnails, knowing that fine textures may look smoother.
How long does upscaling take?
Around 10 to 30 seconds per image on a laptop, faster with a WebGPU graphics card and slower on phones. A progress bar shows how far along it is.
Why is there a size limit?
Upscaling creates very large images and needs a lot of memory. Images up to 2,048 pixels on the long side are accepted so the result fits in your browser.
Can AI upscaling restore a blurry photo?
It can sharpen edges and reduce compression artifacts, but it cannot recover detail that was never captured. Results are best on images that are small rather than out of focus.
Does it keep transparent backgrounds?
Yes. Transparent PNG images keep their transparency, smoothly enlarged with the image.
Are my images uploaded to a server?
No. The AI model runs in your browser on your own device, so your images are never uploaded.
