How to blur faces in a photo
Sharing a photo of an event, a street or a classroom? Hide the faces of people who didn’t agree to be online. An AI face detector finds them automatically, you check and adjust the boxes, and every face is blurred, pixelated or covered, all without uploading the photo anywhere.
-
Step 1
Add your photos
Drop in one picture or a batch. The first one opens straight away with the faces it found outlined.
-
Step 2
Review the boxes
Remove any box that isn’t needed with ×, and drag on the photo to add areas the detector missed, like a license plate.
-
Step 3
Choose the effect
Blur, pixelate or a solid box, as an oval or a rectangle, with the strength you want.
-
Step 4
Save
Press the button to apply it to every image, then download individually or as a ZIP.
When to blur faces
People have a reasonable expectation of not being published online without agreeing to it, and in some situations the law protects it too. Common reasons to blur faces include photos of children who aren’t yours, bystanders in street and travel shots, classmates and colleagues in event photos, people in the background of a property listing, and anyone in a photo you’re posting as evidence or for a news-style report. Blurring lets you share the moment without sharing their identity.
Faces aren’t the only giveaways. Car license plates, name badges, house numbers, uniforms with names and screens with personal information can identify people too. Drag a box over anything like that and it’s hidden along with the faces.
Blur, pixelate or solid box?
- Blur looks the most natural and keeps the photo pleasant to look at.
- Pixelate is the classic “censored” look, which makes it clear the image was deliberately edited.
- Solid box replaces the area with a flat color. It’s the safest option, because nothing of the original remains to be recovered.
Light blur and coarse pixelation can sometimes be partly reversed, or recognized by someone who knows the person. That’s why strength is measured relative to each face and the default is deliberately strong. For high-stakes situations, such as protecting a witness or a vulnerable person, use Solid box.
How the face detection works, and its limits
The tool uses YuNet, a fast, compact open-source face detector. It scans the whole photo and, for larger images, four overlapping quarters as well, so small faces in group photos and crowds are found more reliably. The “Find more” setting lowers the threshold to catch faces that are small, blurred or partly turned away, at the risk of marking a few things that aren’t faces.
No detector is perfect. Faces in profile, faces turned away, heavily shadowed faces, very small faces in the distance and faces partly hidden by hats or hands can be missed. Always review the boxes on each photo before sharing it, and add any that are missing by dragging on the image.
Private by design
It would make little sense to protect people’s identities by uploading their photos to an unknown server. Here, the detector downloads to your browser once (the engine about 14 MB, the detector itself 0.2 MB) and everything runs on your device. Saving the edited image also removes hidden metadata such as the camera model and GPS location; for a full check of what a photo reveals, use Remove EXIF Data, and read our guide to removing location data from photos.
Frequently asked questions
How do I blur faces in a photo automatically?
Add the photo and the AI outlines the faces it finds. Check the boxes, choose blur, pixelate or a solid box, and press the button to apply it.
What if a face isn’t detected?
Drag on the photo to draw a box over it, or switch Detection to Find more. Always review each photo before sharing, because no detector finds every face.
Can I blur license plates or other things?
Yes. Drag a box over anything you want hidden, such as license plates, name badges or house numbers, or simply tap the object and the AI object selector marks it for you. Those areas are hidden with the same effect.
Which effect is the most secure?
Solid box. It replaces the area completely, so nothing can be recovered. Strong blur and pixelation are also hard to reverse, but not impossible.
Can I blur faces in several photos at once?
Yes. Add them all; faces are found in each one, and you can review any photo with Review areas before saving them together.
Does it work with group photos?
Yes. Larger photos are scanned in overlapping sections so small faces are found more reliably. Check the result, as faces turned away may be missed.
Are my photos uploaded?
No. The face detector runs in your browser, so your photos never leave your device.
