How to crop an image
Trim away distractions, straighten up your composition or fit a photo to an exact shape. Crop freely by dragging, choose a ratio like 1:1 or 16:9, or pick a ready-made social media size that crops and resizes in one go.
-
Step 1
Add one or more images
Drop your photos in. The first one opens in the crop editor straight away.
-
Step 2
Choose a shape
Pick Free to crop any way you like, or a ratio or social media preset. Every image gets a centered crop box with that shape.
-
Step 3
Adjust each crop box
Drag the box or its corners to frame the shot. Click “Edit crop” on another image to fine-tune that one too.
-
Step 4
Crop and download
Press Crop to apply each image’s box, then download the results one at a time or as a ZIP.
Ratios and social media presets
The ratio buttons fix the shape of the crop box while you choose what goes inside it:
- 1:1 for square profile pictures, product shots and classic feed posts.
- 4:5 for tall portrait posts that take up more of a phone screen.
- 16:9 for video thumbnails, presentation slides and widescreen banners; 9:16 for full-screen stories and reels.
- 4:3 and 3:2 match the natural shape of most phone and camera photos.
- Original keeps the photo’s own shape while you trim the edges.
The social media presets go one step further and also resize the result to the exact pixel size each platform recommends, such as 1080 × 1350 for an Instagram portrait post or 1280 × 720 for a YouTube thumbnail. Platforms do change their layouts from time to time; our social media image size guide explains the shapes that matter most.
Cropping a batch of photos
When you add several images, choosing a ratio applies it to all of them, with each crop box placed in the middle of its photo. That’s perfect for a set of product photos taken the same way. For pictures where the subject isn’t centered, open each one with Edit crop and move its box; every image remembers its own crop until you change the ratio again.
Cropping only removes pixels from the edges, so a crop never stretches or squashes anything. If you need a different size without losing any of the picture, Resize Image is the right tool, and Rotate & Flip fixes photos that are on their side.
Auto-frame: let AI place the box
Cropping a batch to a tall 9:16 story or a square post usually means fixing every box by hand, because the subject is rarely in the middle. Auto-frame with AI does that for you. A small face detector finds the people in each photo and places faces on the upper third of the frame, the classic portrait composition. Photos without faces go to a cut-out model that finds the main subject, such as a product, a pet or a plate of food, and centers the box on it.
Auto-frame is optional and runs on your device. The first time, your browser asks before downloading the two small models (about 5 MB together, plus the 14 MB AI engine if you haven’t used one of our AI tools before) and keeps them for next time. Every box can still be adjusted afterward with Edit crop, and changing the ratio keeps the boxes on their subjects.
What gets saved
The cropped image keeps its original format, so PNGs stay transparent and JPGs stay JPGs, saved at 92% quality. iPhone HEIC photos open in the editor (via a small decoding step in browsers other than Safari) and are saved as JPG.
Crop boxes are worked out on the full-resolution image, not the preview, so a 4000-pixel photo cropped to a square gives you a sharp 3000 × 3000 result. Phone photos that are stored sideways are turned upright before you see them, so the crop matches exactly what’s on screen. All of this happens in your browser; the photos are never uploaded.
Frequently asked questions
How do I crop a photo into a square?
Choose the 1:1 Square ratio. A square box appears in the middle of each photo; drag it to frame your subject, then press Crop.
Can I crop several images at once?
Yes. The ratio you pick applies to every image, centered by default. Use “Edit crop” on any image to move its box before cropping them all together.
What is the difference between the ratio and social media presets?
Ratios only set the shape of the crop. Social media presets set the shape and then resize the result to the exact pixel size the platform recommends, for example 1080 by 1080 for an Instagram square post.
Will cropping reduce the image quality?
Cropping keeps the original resolution inside the box, so the result is as sharp as the original. JPG and WebP results are re-saved at 92% quality, which looks the same as the original.
Can I crop a transparent PNG?
Yes. PNG images stay PNG after cropping, and their transparent areas are kept.
What does Auto-frame do?
It uses on-device AI to find the faces or main subject in each photo and moves every crop box onto it, so a whole batch is framed in one click.
Does cropping work on phones?
Yes. You can drag the crop box and its corners with your finger on touch screens.
Are my photos uploaded when I crop them?
No. The crop editor and the cropping itself run in your browser, so your images stay on your device.
