How to make a passport photo at home

A passport photo is mostly about measurements: how big your head is in the frame, where your eyes sit and what is behind you. This tool handles those measurements for you. It finds your face, sizes your head to the document’s rules, swaps the wall behind you for a plain color and lays out a sheet you can print at any photo counter.

    1. Step 1

      Take a straight-on photo

Stand a little away from a wall in even light, look at the camera and keep a neutral face. Ask someone to take it at eye level.

    2. Step 2

      Pick your document

Choose the passport, visa or ID you need. The size, head-height range and background colors change to match.

    3. Step 3

      Check the framing

The preview shows guide lines for the top of your head and the eye band. Nudge or zoom if you want, then the check turns green.

    4. Step 4

      Save or print

Download a single photo for online forms, or a 4 × 6 in or A4 sheet to print at a photo counter or at home.

What the AI does, step by step

Two small AI models run inside your browser. The first is a face detector: it finds your face and marks your eyes, which gives us the eye line and the center of your face. The second separates you from the background, the same people model used in our Remove Background tool. From its outline we find the very top of your hair, called the crown.

With the crown, chin and eyes known, the rest is arithmetic. Every document states how tall the head must be, measured from chin to crown, and many also say how high the eyes should be. The tool picks the size in the middle of each allowed range, centers your face, and places the old wall behind a clean, even color. Because the background is replaced, a photo taken against a cluttered room or a patterned wall still works.

    Documents and sizes included

    • US passport: 2 × 2 inches, head 1 to 1⅜ inches, white or off-white background. See the US passport photo page.
    • US visa (DS-160 upload): a square digital file of 600 × 600 pixels, under 240 KB.
    • UK passport: 35 × 45 mm prints with a head of 29 to 34 mm, or the digital photo used for online applications. See the UK passport photo page.
    • Schengen visa and most EU documents: 35 × 45 mm, following the international ICAO photo standard.
    • Canada: 50 × 70 mm, head 31 to 36 mm.
    • Australia: 35 × 45 mm, head 32 to 36 mm.
    • Other countries: generic 35 × 45 mm and 2 × 2 inch formats, which cover a large share of the world’s passports and visas.

Each option links to the official page its numbers come from. Rules do change, and some offices add their own requirements, so take a minute to read that page before you submit anything.

    Printing your photos correctly

Print sheets are saved at 300 dots per inch, which is what photo labs and kiosks expect, and the file itself records that resolution. The single most common mistake is letting the printer “fit to page”: that stretches the sheet and every photo comes out the wrong size. Always choose actual size or 100% scale.

A 4 × 6 inch print is the cheapest option at most pharmacies and supermarkets, usually costing about as much as any standard photo. A4 is handy for printing at home on photo paper, and fits many more copies. Thin gray guide lines show where to cut; a paper trimmer gives cleaner edges than scissors.

    Honest limits

This tool checks size and framing. It cannot judge everything an official will look at: whether you are smiling, whether your eyes are fully open, whether there are shadows on your face or glare on your skin, or whether your photo is recent. Those depend on the original picture, which is why a well-lit, straight-on photo matters more than anything else.

Some authorities have extra rules for how a photo is produced. Australia, for example, asks for prints from a professional process and is wary of apps. When a document is strict about this, a photo studio or a passport office may still be the safest route. We never claim that a photo will be accepted, only that it matches the published measurements.

Your ID photo stays on your device

Identity photos are exactly the kind of picture you should not hand to unknown servers. Here nothing is uploaded: the face detector and background model are downloaded once from our own domain, then everything runs locally in your browser tab. You can even disconnect from the internet after the models load. For more on choosing trustworthy tools, read whether online image tools are safe.

    Frequently asked questions

Is this passport photo maker free?

Yes. There is no watermark, no sign-up and no limit on the number of photos or print sheets you create.

Will my passport photo be accepted?

The tool matches the size, head height, eye line and background published for each document, which covers the most common reasons for rejection. Expression, lighting and photo age still depend on your original picture, so no tool can promise acceptance.

Can I take the photo with my phone?

Yes. Ask someone to hold the phone at your eye level about five feet away, use the main camera rather than the selfie camera, and stand facing a window for soft, even light.

Do I need a white wall?

No. The AI replaces whatever is behind you with a plain background color allowed for your document. A plainer wall still helps the edges around your hair look clean.

How do I print the sheet at the right size?

Choose actual size or 100% scale in the print dialog, never fit to page. At a photo kiosk, order a standard 4 × 6 inch print of the sheet file.

    Can I wear glasses?

Many documents, including US passports and visas, no longer allow glasses. Check the official page linked next to your document before taking the photo.

    Are my photos uploaded?

No. The AI models download to your browser once and run there. Your photo and the finished passport photos never leave your device.
